Garzora, 100 years ago

This picture was taken about 100 years ago at Garzora. While it seems that there have been people living in the area almost all of the time, nobody in the area ever has heard of any person named "Garzotto". There are no Garzottos anywhere near Alpe Garzott. In fact, in all of Switzerland, about 20 people named "Garzotto" can be found in the phone books. Only one of them lives in Ticino (the Italian speaking part of Switzerland). All of them, apart from three people, are descendents of two brothers who immigrated from Italy around 1900.

So what to make about that? The most probably hypothesis is: one ore more people left Alpe Garzott - maybe during some famine - and went down (Alpe Garzott is at about 1630 meters above sea level) to northern Italy. Nowadays, about 200 Garzottos can be found in the phone books of Italy.

Dieses Foto wurde vor etwa 100 Jahren auf der Alpe Garzora aufgenommen. Zwar haben in der Gegend schon lange Menschen gelebt, aber in der Gegend löst der Name "Garzotto" als Familiennamen nur Staunen aus. Es gibt niemanden dort, der so heisst. Im Telefonbuch für die Schweiz findet man nur etwa 22 Einträge für Garzotto (siehe hier). Nur ein "Garzotto" aus dem Telefonbuch wohnt im Tessin - und nicht in der Nähe der Alp. Die meisten davon sind Nachkommen von 2 Brüdern, die um ca. 1900 von Valle di Sopra (Lusiana, Vicenza) eingewandert sind. Im italienischen Telefonbuch sind etwa 200 Garzottos zu finden, etwa 2/3 davon in der Provinz Vicenza (siehe hier).

Was könnte das nun bedeuten? Hypothese: während der Hungersnöte sind die Leute aus der kargen Gegend der Alp Garzott (1630 müM) abgewandert Richtung Süden und haben sich dort am Alpenrand verbreitet. Später sind einige davon wieder in die Schweiz zurückgekehrt. Mittlerweile wissen wir, dass auch die anderen Garzottos, die heute in der Ostschweiz leben) Nachkommen von Garzottos aus der Gegend von Lusiana sind.
