Roots /Herkunft

Where does the name "Garzotto" come from? Where did our ancestors come from?

We tried to find out. The information collected here is not the truth, but the most current set of hypotheses.

---

Woher kommt der Name "Garzotto"? Woher kamen unsere Vorfahren?

Alpe Garzott and Alpe Garzora
Alpe Garzott and Alpe Garzora
The name "Garzotto" sounds Italian, but does not make any sense in Italian. However, in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, not far from Olivone, there are two places named "Garzora" and "Garzott". "Garzora" can be found even on the 1:100000 scale map (shown here) and "Garzott" can be found on the 1:25000 scale map.

Garzott and Garzora on the Dufour map
Garzott and Garzora on the Dufour map
Even on the Dufour map, which is dated around 1855, "Garzora" can be found and some buildings which are on Garzott. At that time, there obviously were more buildings in the valley (Luzzone) where now is the Lake Luzzone (a reservoir).

In the villages around, we found evidence that "Alpe Garzott" and "Alpe Garzora" existed in the beginning of the 17 century and probably even much earlier (someone mentioned Roman coins found in the
area).

---

Formaggio Garzotto
Formaggio Garzotto
This image shows the cheese that is currently being produced on the Alpe Garzott and that is labelled "Formaggio Garzotto". Apparently, it has been produced for quite a while, but we could not yet find out for how long.

We were able to speak with the cheesemaker and his father. They live in the nearby village Aquila and produce the cheese on the Alpe Garzott. They both speak the local dialect. We found out that "zott" and "zora" correspond to "sotto" and "sopra", respectively, in Italian, which means "below" or "above" or "lower" and "upper". "Gar" seems to be a word for which there is no direct Italian translation. They said the closest word probably is "corte", which - among other meanings - means "farm". In Swiss German, there is the word "Gade" or "Gaden", which might be related to "Gar". Its meaning is a cottage, usually in the mountains, used as a stable or for people to sleep in it temporarily.

So after all, "Garzott" seems to mean something like "lower farm/lower cottage" or "untere Gade" in Swiss German.

In Italian, usually a "o" or a "a" (depending on the gender) is appended to a site name to indicate something is coming from that site. That is why the cheese is labelled "Garzotto". But also a person who comes from "Garzott" would be a "Garzotto". This, so far, is the most probable explanation of where the name "Garzotto" comes from.

And yes: Garzotto cheese tastes great! :-)

Am nächsten käme "corte", also Hof.

Garzora, 100 years ago
Garzora, 100 years ago
This picture was taken about 100 years ago at Garzora. While it seems that there have been people living in the area almost all of the time, nobody in the area ever has heard of any person named "Garzotto". There are no Garzottos anywhere near Alpe Garzott. In fact, in all of Switzerland, about 20 people named "Garzotto" can be found in the phone books. Only one of them lives in Ticino (the Italian speaking part of Switzerland). All of them, apart from three people, are descendents of two brothers who immigrated from Italy around 1900.

So what to make about that? The most probably hypothesis is: one ore more people left Alpe Garzott - maybe during some famine - and went down (Alpe Garzott is at about 1630 meters above sea level) to northern Italy. Nowadays, about 200 Garzottos can be found in the phone books of Italy.

Was könnte das nun bedeuten?
